Blanca Lozano

Computer Information Systems Instructor

Whether it’s volunteering at a community organization or teaching her computer information systems students at Texas Southmost College, serving others has been Blanca Lozano’s life-long mission.

“I’m here because of the mission that we have and the goals that have been set for us,” said Lozano, who started at TSC in 1984. “It goes with my personal mission and what I want to do.”

“I not only teach the course content, but motivate them to see the potential they have to do and accomplish more.”

“It’s been a great experience here at TSC and I still continue to get to do what I feel is my mission by working with the students,” she added. “Sometimes there are students that are undecided, sometimes they just don’t know what they want to do or are limited in what they think they can do. We start some of them with a certificate and I help them get into the associate degree program by showing them that there is more that they can do.”

Lozano likes to think of her students as “raw data” when they come into her class and as “completed products” when they complete a certificate or an associate degree.

“I not only teach the course content, but motivate them to see the potential they have to do and accomplish more,” Lozano explained. “You see the growth of the student and not just academically, but personal growth. It’s great to see all of their accomplishments.”

In her spare time, Lozano works on her personal mission by volunteering her time and knowledge at various organizations in the binational communities of Brownsville and Matamoros.

In Matamoros, Lozano teaches basic computer workshops at Al Favor de la Vida, a pro-life organization, and assists with psychological therapy for mothers of children with cleft palates at Cambiando Corazones. She also volunteers at a religious organization in Brownsville that caters to different denominations.

“I’m always willing to serve my community in any way, in Brownsville and Matamoros,” said Lozano. “It’s very rewarding and serving others is the best. It’s been a great experience and it has made me what I am today.”
