Department of Arts, Business, and History

Situated in the heart of historic Brownsville, the Government and History Department of Texas Southmost College is a vibrant community of scholars dedicated to innovative undergraduate instruction across a broad-range of chronological, geographic, subject, and thematic areas. Our faculty are bound together by a commitment to excellence in pedagogy and fostering creative approaches to the acquisition of traditional humanistic skills of creative reading and writing.

Government and History courses at TSC provide students an essential foundation for producing complex understandings of the past and the systems of power and inequality that continue to impact our homes and communities. We utilize interdisciplinary and conceptual approaches facilitative to the acquisition of knowledge, including collaborative group work, service-learning and social justice projects, and informed, critical analysis of historical and political texts. Our courses empower students to perform professional-level work necessary for higher level academic degrees, prepare them for 21st-century career pathway opportunities, and enable them to function effectively as informed citizens in a diverse multicultural society.
