Texas Southmost College (TSC) was awarded $108,500 from the All In Internship program grant that will provide 45 TSC students with paid internships. The All In Internship program grant is a joint initiative between TSC, The Greater Brownsville Incentive Corporation, the United Way of Southern Cameron County and The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. The overall grant award amount was for $235,300. UTRGV also received $108,500. "The All In Internship program grant will connect postsecondary students with the workforce by engaging the business community before the students graduate," United Way Postsecondary Success Coordinator Blanca Davila said. "This is an initiative that will support our higher education institutions to retain the students through the end of their academic programs, whether it's a certificate, associate or bachelor's degree, and help them transition into the workforce." The goal of the All In Internship program is to increase temporary employees through the creation of 90 new internship positions in high-demand occupations (45 internships for TSC and 45 for UTRGV), increase work readiness of interns through training, and assist in meeting the skilled workforce needs of employers to fill the demand of the local labor market. As part of the program, the 45 TSC students will participate in professional soft skills workshops through the Texas Workforce Commission, be placed in paid internships with local employers and complete workforce readiness training. "This is a perfect opportunity to get our students out into the workforce," TSC Student Life Director Armando Ponce said. "Students will have a chance to get real world experience with some of the businesses in Brownsville through the internship. It's a great way for them to get experience in their chosen field that will give them a competitive edge in the workforce after they graduate." To qualify for the All In Internship program, TSC students must be enrolled in the last semester of their certificate or associate degree program, eligible to work in the U.S., in good academic standing, meet with an internship coordinator and participate in soft skills workshops before applying for an internship.
