Careers in Customs & Border Protection launches Scorpion Lecture Series

A Customs & Border Patrol agent talks to a Texas Southmost College Student after the Scorpion Lecture Series on Careers in CBP concluded on Sept. 27, 2017 at the TSC SET-B Lecture Hall.

Customs and Border Patrol agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) visited Texas Southmost College (TSC) on Sept. 27, 2017 to talk to students about the requirements and duties of their profession as part of the launch of the Scorpion Lecture Series at the SET-B Lecture Hall.

"We have an opportunity to come out and tell students a little about our work, and some of the basic requirements," said Jaime Salazar, the patrol agent in charge of the Brownsville Border Patrol Station. "I think there's nothing better than potential, prospective students, or future agents, to meet us and see a little beyond what they see in the news."

Students were given in-depth details on the variety of positions, compensation, benefits and several other employment topics and opportunities related to a career with DHS.

"What really got my interest was how many agents they were hiring, 5,000 agents," said Lucy Ornelas, a TSC criminal justice major. "It's really amazing how this college gives everyone opportunities. We all appreciate the staff making the time and effort to bring border patrol agents out for us to meet."

The Scorpion Lecture Series is a continuing series of presentations for TSC students, faculty, staff and the general public. The series covers a variety of topics from employment opportunities and trends to social issues affecting South Texas.
