TSC scholarship application deadline fast approaching

Texas Southmost College students can use the college's newest scholarship application software to apply to several scholarships at one time. The scholarship deadline is May 31.

The scholarship deadline at Texas Southmost College is fast approaching on May 31, and it’s never been easier for students to apply.

With the college’s newest scholarship application software, AwardSpring, students have a centralized location to find and apply for the 21 internal active scholarships that are waiting to be awarded.

TSC Coordinator of Institutional Advancement Melissa Muzquiz said researching and applying for scholarships is sometimes a daunting task for students and can result in funds being left untouched.

“There are a lot questions when it comes to applying for scholarships – which one is right for me, what do I qualify for and can I apply for several scholarships at once?” she said. “And with AwardSpring applying for scholarships is no longer mind boggling.”

TSC’s Foundation and Alumni Relations department, in collaboration with the Division of Student Services, implemented the new streamlined scholarship application process to give students a user-friendly system that allows the completion of one application to cover criteria for all scholarships.

For the most part, one essay and letter of recommendation will cover all scholarship applications, unless otherwise prompted by the system.

“Every scholarship is worth applying for,” said Muzquiz. “They help in reducing the cost of tuition and other expenses. It’s important our students take advantage of these funds.”

Scholarships are funds that do not have to be paid back and are made available to TSC students each semester through donations made by corporations, businesses, community organizations, individual donors and the TSC Foundation.

“These gifts help alleviate the burden of higher education debt and open doors of opportunity for students to achieve their educational goals,” said Muzquiz.

For recent TSC Emergency Medical Science graduate Edith Peña, receiving the TSC Foundation Scholarship twice was a game changer.

“This scholarship is what helped me get to this point in my education,” said the 21-year-old. “It helped me pay for school, uniforms and equipment I may otherwise would have struggled to pay for.”

Peña added, “Even though I was working, the EMS program doesn’t leave much time for me to put in many hours. So even though I was making money, it wasn’t enough, and that’s why I’m thankful for this scholarship and for the college helping its students in this way.”
